Food aid and humanitarian efforts in East Africa

Overview

Humanitarian food aid efforts have been directed toward East Africa to address severe food insecurity and regional instability. In August 2026, DP World and the United Nations World Food Programme delivered 5,000 metric tonnes of rice from India to Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo via Tanzania. This shipment aimed to support over 14,200 people for one month amidst a hunger crisis in the DRC and refugee pressures in Burundi and Rwanda.

Following this, Japan provided an additional 2,500 tonnes of rice to Burundi, a donation valued at over 2 million USD. Burundian officials stated that proceeds from the sale of this rice would fund long-term development projects. During this period, Burundi’s President, acting as the Chairperson of the African Union, also engaged in diplomatic discussions with a Sudanese delegation regarding peace pathways and the establishment of humanitarian aid corridors in Sudan.
