DP World launches shore power in Peru and invests in India
DP World has launched Latin America’s first shore power system at the Port of Callao in Peru. This infrastructure allows container ships to connect to 100% certified renewable electricity while docked, enabling them to switch off auxiliary engines. The system is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by more than 6,300 tonnes annually and can reduce nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter by over 90% per vessel call.
The project is part of a $400 million Bicentennial Pier expansion and is part of a broader $1 billion investment by DP World in Peru. Approximately 80% of vessels at Pier 3 are already equipped to use the system. This marks Callao as DP World’s third global terminal to offer shore power, following locations in Canada.
Separately, DP World has committed $800 million toward expanding maritime infrastructure in India, focusing on port capacity and logistics corridors. This significant investment in the Indian market has drawn attention to the underdeveloped state of Trincomalee’s natural deep-water harbour in Sri Lanka, which remains a strategic maritime location.
