Makan Bergizi Gratis program faces scrutiny following student food poisoning incidents

Multiple incidents of food poisoning linked to the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program have prompted calls for a total evaluation of the government initiative. In Lombok Tengah, West Nusa Tenggara, 352 students reportedly fell ill after consuming meals provided by the program on September 11, 2026.

In response to these incidents, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sari Yuliati has urged the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure all Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) strictly follow standard operating procedures. She emphasized that the safety of children must be the top priority and called for strict sanctions if negligence is found.

Separately, two students from Karo, North Sumatra, who were victims of a suspected mass poisoning in August, have been transferred to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta for advanced medical and psychological care. This transfer was directed by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to ensure the students receive optimal treatment, particularly for psychological trauma and mental health issues exacerbated by social media cyberbullying. North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution accompanied the patients and requested that the public refrain from making negative comments that could further impact the victims' recovery.
