Indonesian rupiah faces pressure ahead of Bank Indonesia rate decision
The Indonesian rupiah has faced volatility and weakness against the US dollar, trading near the Rp17,800–Rp17,900 range. This downward pressure is attributed to external factors, including rising oil prices and heightened geopolitical uncertainty stemming from tensions between the United States and Iran.
Market attention is currently focused on the upcoming Bank Indonesia (BI) policy meeting. Economists widely expect the central bank to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 5.75% under the leadership of acting Governor Destry Damayanti. Analysts suggest that after a series of rate hikes earlier in the year, the central bank has room to pause to support domestic growth while managing currency stability through market interventions.
Domestically, recent data shows July 2026 inflation recorded a monthly deflation of 0.14%, with annual inflation at 2.88%. While inflation remains controlled, experts warn that external pressures and global economic uncertainty continue to pose risks to the rupiah's stability.
