Indonesian financial and diplomatic leadership appointments

Overview

The Indonesian government is moving to fill critical vacancies in the financial and diplomatic sectors. On August 10, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed the submission of three Presidential Letters to the House of Representatives (DPR RI). These submissions propose candidates for the definitive Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), the Senior Deputy Governor and Deputy Governor of BI, and Commissioners for the Financial Services Authority (OJK), as well as several Indonesian ambassadors. Prasetyo Hadi clarified that these appointments prioritize filling existing vacancies rather than a broad restructuring of the Red and White Cabinet.

As the legislative process proceeds, the economic landscape faces external pressures. The Indonesian rupiah has experienced volatility, trading in the Rp 17,800–Rp 17,900 range against the US dollar. This weakness is attributed to rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty involving the United States and Iran.

Market participants are focused on the upcoming Bank Indonesia policy meeting. Under the leadership of acting Governor Destry Damayanti, economists widely expect the central bank to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 5.75% to support domestic growth while managing currency stability. This follows July 2026 data showing a monthly deflation of 0.14% and annual inflation at 2.88%.

These developments occur alongside a rise in Indonesia’s foreign debt, which reached US$453.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026, and a resilient Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) that has recently crossed the 6,470 level.
