The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, driven by the rare Bundibugyo virus. As of August 11, 2026, the outbreak has recorded 4,381 confirmed cases and 2,011 deaths. The epidemic is spreading across five provinces, with the Ituri province serving as the epicenter.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the virus likely began circulating in February, several months before the official declaration on May 15. This delay has left health responders struggling to catch up with the spread. The rapid escalation is notable; while it took nine weeks to reach 1,000 deaths, the toll doubled in just three weeks.

Containment efforts are severely hampered by several factors: ongoing rebel conflict in the east, poor road infrastructure, and strikes by unpaid healthcare workers. Additionally, the WHO reports that 60% to 70% of new cases are occurring outside of monitored contacts. Because the Bundibugyo strain lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment, the WHO has recommended prioritizing a phase 3 clinical trial for the Ervebo vaccine to test its potential cross-protection.
