DR Congo faces humanitarian crisis amid conflict and disease
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing a massive humanitarian crisis driven by persistent conflict, displacement, and disease outbreaks. According to the World Health Organization, the nation currently has the highest number of people in need of humanitarian aid globally, with 25.4 million individuals affected.
In the eastern regions, including North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, violence from groups such as the M23 movement has displaced millions and overwhelmed sanitation systems. This instability has contributed to severe food insecurity, with approximately 28.8 million people forecast to experience high levels of acute food insecurity through December. Over 15.7 million people face severe food insecurity, increasing the risk of malnutrition.
Health threats are also escalating. The country has reported significant outbreaks of Mpox, with over 20,000 cases and 1,000 deaths since the start of 2023. Additionally, the nation is confronting outbreaks of cholera, measles, meningitis, plague, and Ebola, all of which are exacerbated by climate shocks such as flooding and landslides.
