DRC conflict and humanitarian crisis
Overview
Conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has caused massive population displacements. In South Kivu, clashes between the RFN and the army supported by Wazalendo have forced approximately 12,000 households from the Kaziba area to flee, leaving many without food or shelter. This violence has also driven nearly 3,000 Congolese refugees into Burundi’s Cishemere transit camp, where residents report extreme precariousness and a lack of basic necessities.
The situation has evolved into a broader humanitarian crisis. The World Health Organization reports that 25.4 million people in the DRC are in need of aid, the highest number globally. Violence from groups such as the M23 movement in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri has contributed to severe food insecurity affecting millions. Furthermore, the country is facing escalating health threats, including outbreaks of Mpox, cholera, measles, meningitis, plague, and Ebola, which are worsened by climate-related flooding and landslides.
