DR Congo police chief orders strict discipline as opposition protests loom

Police commissioner Israel Kantu of the Congolese National Police warned officers in Kinshasa to uphold professionalism and discipline ahead of scheduled opposition rallies, threatening severe sanctions for any acts of violence or indiscipline. He also directed the continued removal of abandoned vehicles from police stations to improve operational capacity.

Security officials reiterated their resolve to protect public order, condemning any attempts at subversion while urging respect for democratic values. The provincial governor highlighted the need to safeguard citizens’ freedoms and maintain peace.

Municipal authorities in Lubumbashi, Likasi and Kolwezi have prohibited public demonstrations, with Kolwezi citing an Ebola outbreak as the reason. The opposition coalition C64 announced a planned nationwide march on 8 July demanding President Félix Tshisekedi’s resignation.
