Politician Marie-Celestin Karondwa killed in DRC after Ebola radio broadcast

Marie-Celestin Karondwa, an acting president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) federal executive committee in Butembo, has reportedly been beaten to death following a radio broadcast regarding Ebola prevention.

According to the local UDPS federation, the attack occurred in the Vulindi neighborhood after Karondwa participated in a Radio Mwangaza program to promote health measures and discuss the threat posed by the virus. The political leader was reportedly beaten, robbed of his belongings, and his home was set on fire by individuals identified by the party as neighbors.

This incident occurs amid a continuing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where mistrust and misinformation have led to repeated attacks on health response teams. Government data indicates that the current outbreak has caused 8,067 infections and 3,901 deaths. The identity and motives of the attackers remain unknown.
