Dr. Ebu Safiyye Endures Alleged Torture in Israeli Nitzan Prison

Palestinian physician Dr. Ebu Safiyye, identified by Hamas-affiliated media as a member of the group, has been detained by Israeli authorities since 27 July. He is held in the "Rakefet" wing of Nitzan Prison, where the media reports he has repeatedly been beaten, subjected to electric shocks, tear‑gas, plastic bullets and police dogs, resulting in a broken rib and a range of health problems including heart issues, hypertension, neck pain, back herniation, eye disorders and dizziness.

The statements claim that despite his deteriorating condition, prison officials have provided only sedatives rather than necessary medical treatment. Dr. Safiyye was transferred to the Rakefet unit on 24 June 2026 and spent 21 days in a single‑occupancy cell. On 28 April, Israel's Berşeva Regional Court extended his detention under the Illegal Combatants Law without filing any charges. The Israeli army previously raided the Kemal Advan Hospital in northern Gaza, alleging it was used as a Hamas command centre, which led to his initial arrest.

"Ebu Safiyye has been subjected to the most severe torture since his detention on July 27, experiencing the hardest days of his life," the media office said.
