Gaza health collapse deepens, doctors' detention escalates

Overview

The humanitarian emergency in Gaza continues to worsen. A UN health assessment in July 2026 recorded more than 9,000 cholera cases, a surge of acute-respiratory and skin infections, and roughly 9,300 suspected chickenpox cases. Overcrowded displacement tents, a collapsed sewage system, and severe shortages of medicine and clean water have made isolating the sick impossible, threatening a full health-system collapse. The detention of Palestinian health workers has intensified the crisis. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has been held without charge since his arrest on 27 December 2024. By late July 2026, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that his continued detention violates international law and demanded his immediate release. Reports from the Prisoners' Media Office and legal representatives indicate Dr. Abu Safiya has suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple rib fractures, eye and head injuries, and chest trauma. These injuries are allegedly the result of repeated beatings with batons, electric shocks, tear gas, rubber bullets, and attacks by police dogs while in solitary confinement at the Rakefet wing of Nitzan prison. Despite suffering from pre-existing heart disease and high blood pressure, authorities have reportedly limited his treatment to painkillers. In September 2026, legal actions expanded as Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI) filed a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court seeking the release of 14 specific doctors and all Gaza healthcare workers held arbitrarily. The appeal, supported by MEDU and Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII under the title ‘Caring is not a crime’, argues that the arrest of hundreds of medical workers prevents the rehabilitation of Gaza’s medical infrastructure. Dr. Abu Safiya has provided further testimony through his lawyer alleging physical assaults by guards using hands, legs, and batons on sensitive areas.
