UN, NGOs & MSF warn of Gaza health collapse, detained staff

Entities: Kamal Adwan Hospital · United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention · Israel · Palestinian journalists · Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya

Overview

The humanitarian emergency in Gaza continues to deteriorate. A UN health assessment in July 2026 recorded over 9,000 cholera cases, a surge of acute‑respiratory and skin infections, and roughly 9,300 suspected chickenpox cases, half of them in Khan Younis. Overcrowded displacement tents, a collapsed sewage system and severe shortages of medicines, clean water and hygiene supplies have made isolation of sick children virtually impossible, driving hospitalisations and threatening full health‑system collapse.

New data from more than 130 health facilities confirm that the chickenpox outbreak has spread across the Strip’s 1,600 displacement sites, where about 1.7 million people now live. The outbreak coincides with an additional 18,000 skin infections such as scabies and impetigo. Families share single‑person tents, leaving no space for separate bedding or washing, and officials warn that reported figures likely underestimate the true scale.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) continues to call for the unconditional release of the more than 50 Palestinian health workers detained since the conflict began, highlighting the case of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, a pediatrician and former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has concluded that his detention without charge since December 2024 violates international law and demands his immediate release, citing allegations of beatings, solitary confinement, denial of medical care and signs of torture. MSF warns that silence on these arrests makes the international community complicit and urges that detainees receive adequate medical care and dignified conditions while awaiting release.
