Dr. Ian Smith discusses menopause nutrition and weight loss

Dr. Ian Smith has released a new book, ‘The New Menopause Kitchen’, designed to help women manage nutrition and exercise during perimenopause and menopause. The program was developed in response to women in his previous health programs reporting changes in weight, sleep, bloating, and hot flashes.

Smith emphasizes the importance of protein intake to combat muscle loss, which can negatively impact metabolism during menopause. He recommends protein sources such as fish, chicken, legumes, and yogurt, though he advises selecting yogurt with at least 12 grams of protein and no more than 7 grams of sugar.

Regarding weight management, Smith addressed the use of GLP-1 medications, including Wegovy and Zepbound, noting they should be medically monitored and paired with lifestyle changes. He also suggested that a daily goal of 12,000 steps may be more effective for weight loss than the commonly cited 10,000 steps.
