Liberia advances educational and legal initiatives

Liberia is seeing a series of developments aimed at strengthening its educational infrastructure and legal accountability. The Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Authority (LPRA) has committed US$48,390 to upgrade the University of Liberia’s Earth Sciences Laboratory, a move intended to provide engineering students with essential practical experience in the petroleum sector.

In the realm of literacy, the Kids’ Educational Engagement Project (KEEP Liberia) has established a new reading room at Barnesville Public High School. Supported by Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, the facility contains over 2,000 books and five laptops to bolster digital literacy.

On the legal front, the Liberian National Bar Association is taking its advocacy to the international stage. President Cllr. F. Juah Lawson is scheduled to address an African Union event during International Law Week in New York, where she will press for war crimes accountability and the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court to address the exploitation of children during Liberia’s 14-year civil conflict.

Additionally, the Liberian National Students Union (LINSU) is advocating for the institutionalization of its National Academic County Meet. Despite facing financial constraints and a lack of a dedicated US$100,000 budget, the union continues to promote the competition as a means to foster academic excellence and national unity among students.
