Draconid meteor shower to peak October 8-9
The Draconid meteor shower is active from October 6 to October 10, 2026, with peak activity expected during the night of October 8 into the early hours of October 9. Originating from debris left by the comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, the shower is visible in the Northern Hemisphere.
Observation conditions are expected to be favorable due to a nearly new moon, which will provide a dark sky and minimize light interference. Unlike many other meteor showers that are best viewed after midnight, the Draconids' radiant point in the Draco constellation sits high in the sky during the early evening, making them ideal for viewing shortly after dark.
While typically a modest shower producing approximately 5 to 20 meteors per hour, the Draconids are known for their unpredictability and have historically produced intense outbursts. Observers are advised to find dark locations away from city lights and do not require telescopes or binoculars for viewing.
