2026 Orionids and October astronomical events
Overview
The Orionids meteor shower is expected to be active from October 2 to November 7, 2026, with its peak occurring during the night of October 21 to 22. This event, caused by debris from Halley’s Comet, may produce 10 to 20 meteors per hour traveling at 66 kilometers per second. Visibility may be affected by a waxing gibbous moon during the first half of the night. In Colorado, Mark Laurin suggests a “marathon-o-meteor-showers” effect due to seven major and minor showers peaking in October. The Draconid meteor shower, caused by the 21P/Giacobini–Zinner comet, is active from October 6 to 10, 2026. Its peak is projected for the night of October 8 through the early hours of October 9. Unlike many showers, the Draconids are best viewed in the early evening when their radiant point near the constellation Draco is highest in the sky. Viewing conditions are expected to be favorable as a waning crescent moon will not be bright enough to obscure the display. While the American Meteor Society classifies the Draconids as a variable shower that typically produces a modest number of meteors, stronger displays have occurred in the past. Observers can expect approximately 10 meteors per hour, with meteors moving more slowly than those in other showers and remaining visible for one to two seconds. Experts recommend observing from dark locations without telescopes to maximize the field of view. Additional astronomical highlights include planetary conjunctions. In Brazil, the Moon will appear close to Jupiter before dawn on October 6. A planetary “dance” involving Mercury and Venus is also expected. Between October 7 and 8, Mars and Jupiter will be visible in the morning, while Saturn will be visible during the evening and night.
