Dragon fruit prices in Vietnam plummet amid oversupply
Dragon fruit prices in Vietnam have experienced a significant decline, dropping to as low as 1,000–2,000 VND per kilogram in major growing regions like Binh Thuan. This price crash occurs during the peak season when supply typically surges, but market demand has not kept pace.
Industry experts note that the situation is exacerbated by China, a major traditional market, increasingly achieving self-sufficiency in dragon fruit production and subsequently reducing its imports. Huynh Canh, Chairman of the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association, explained that while there are no customs bottlenecks, a sudden spike in production has overwhelmed current consumption levels.
The low prices have left many farmers struggling to cover basic production costs, including fertilizers, pesticides, and labor. In some areas, the market value has fallen below the break-even point, which is estimated at 6,000 VND per kilogram for the main crop and 9,000 VND per kilogram for the off-season crop.
