Vietnam agricultural market price fluctuations

Overview

Agricultural markets in Vietnam have experienced significant price volatility driven by supply shifts and weather conditions.

In late September, dragon fruit prices plummeted to as low as 1,000–2,000 VND per kilogram in regions such as Binh Thuan. This decline was attributed to a surge in production during peak season and reduced demand from China. However, by October, dragon fruit prices in the Mekong Delta showed signs of recovery, with white-fleshed varieties fetching 14,000–15,000 VND/kg and red-fleshed varieties reaching 20,000–27,000 VND/kg.

Weather-related disruptions have heavily impacted vegetable markets. Prolonged rainfall and flooding in regions like Lam Dong have reduced harvest volumes and caused quality deterioration. In Ho Chi Minh City, traders at the Binh Dien Agricultural Wholesale Market reported a 15-20% decrease in vegetable volume compared to the previous month. This scarcity has caused prices for green vegetables to surge to one and a half or twice their usual rates; for example, coriander in Da Lat rose from 30,000–40,000 VND/kg to 90,000–100,000 VND/kg. Consequently, consumers have begun opting for cheaper root vegetables or gourds to manage costs.

Other commodities have seen upward trends. Cassava prices rose sharply, with fresh cassava reaching 4,200–4,800 VND/kg in Tay Ninh, while King orange prices in Vinh Long also increased compared to the previous year.
