Drakeo the Ruler estate faces setback in Live Nation lawsuit

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has issued a ruling in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estate of rapper Drakeo the Ruler. Judge James I. Montgomery ruled that Live Nation Worldwide Inc. and C3 Presents LLC are not required to disclose their financial records to the estate at this stage of the proceedings.

Darrylene Corniel, the rapper’s mother, had argued that access to these financial records was necessary to assess potential punitive damages. However, the judge stated he was not persuaded by the argument that the estate had shown a substantial probability of prevailing on claims of malice or oppression required for such damages.

The lawsuit stems from a December 2021 incident at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival in Exposition Park, where Drakeo the Ruler was fatally stabbed during a backstage altercation. The estate has named several defendants, including C3 Presents, Bobby Dee Presents Inc., Jeff Shuman, and USC, seeking accountability for security and operational failures.

Defense attorneys for Live Nation and C3 argued that the case is one of premises-security negligence rather than intentional wrongdoing, maintaining that their clients demonstrated a good-faith commitment to safety. A trial for the wrongful death lawsuit is currently scheduled to begin on November 30.
