DRC army calls for stronger international action against M23 rebels
On 6 June 2026, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) used a press briefing to urge the international community to unequivocally condemn the attacks carried out by the M23/AFC rebel coalition in eastern DRC. Lieutenant‑Colonel Mak Hazukay Mongba demanded tougher measures to stop armed groups from acquiring sophisticated weapons and called for increased support for anti‑terrorism efforts.
The FARDC accused M23 of breaching peace commitments made under the Washington and Doha processes, noting ongoing hostilities in North Kivu and the highlands of Fizi and Uvira. These attacks have caused civilian casualties, massive displacement and extensive material damage. The army reaffirmed its full mobilisation to protect civilians, defend national sovereignty and restore state authority throughout the country, while appealing for continued international solidarity.
The statement highlighted the limited progress of diplomatic initiatives involving partners such as the United States and Qatar, and stressed the need for a stronger, united response to end the cycle of violence.
