DRC ceasefire verification missions completed in Minembwe and Masisi
The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) has completed two field missions to monitor the ceasefire in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The missions took place in Minembwe, South Kivu, from August 24 to 25, and in Masisi, North Kivu, from September 10 to 12, 2026.
These verification efforts, conducted by the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism Plus (MCVE+), aim to support a lasting ceasefire between the Congolese government and the AFC/M23 as part of the Doha peace process. The CIRGL reported that verification teams were able to access both areas safely and without hindrance, citing cooperation from both parties.
While the missions represent a step toward implementing peace commitments, reports of fighting and mutual accusations of violations continue in various parts of North and South Kivu. The mechanism, supported logistically by MONUSCO, is tasked with gathering field data and verifying claims of ceasefire breaches. Future reports will detail investigated incidents and recommended measures to the involved parties.
