DRC constitutional reform debate gathers political parties and church leaders

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Alliance of Humanist Democrats (ADH) reiterated support for a constitutional overhaul that would amend article 10 on nationality, restore the name "Zaïre," and change the election of senators and provincial governors to direct universal suffrage. ADH spokesperson Jean‑Claude Baende argued that revisions would strengthen democracy, good governance and national unity.

Separately, the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) held hearings with leading advocates on the issue. Professor André Mbata of the Union Sacrée de la Nation urged reforms to address political, institutional and social realities, while opposition leader Martin Fayulu warned that a review would be ill‑timed amid security challenges in the east and could threaten national cohesion. ECC officials said they will issue an official position on the constitution on 7 June after further deliberation.
