DRC constitutional reform debate intensifies amid opposition lawsuit and church calls

Opposition coalition C64 in the Democratic Republic of Congo has postponed filing a legal complaint against President Félix Tshisekedi, alleging the president seeks to amend the constitution to enable a third term. The group says new legal and factual evidence must be incorporated before proceeding and gave no new filing date.

The ruling party UDPS has formed a pro‑reform platform, C4, supporting the constitutional changes. Religious leaders of the Eglise du Christ au Congo (ECC) have urged an inclusive, democratic dialogue, insisting any revision obeys constitutional articles 5, 218‑220 and should not occur during war, emergency or siege conditions. The ECC emphasises that the constitution can be revised only through a national referendum convened by the president.

Both sides warn that deepening political contradictions could spark further violence in a country already affected by armed groups, especially in North‑ and South‑Kivu provinces.
