DRC Ebola Outbreak Reaches Record 1,094 Cases and 277 Deaths
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has confirmed 1,094 Ebola infections and 277 deaths as of 24 June 2024, the highest tally for any African Ebola outbreak in its first month, according to the World Health Organization. Health officials report 387 patients under quarantine or treatment, 115 recoveries, and 131 suspected cases, including 44 suspected deaths.
Testing capacity has surged from about 30 daily tests in Kinshasa to over 2,000, and treatment beds have expanded to more than 500 across 19 health zones. President Félix Tshisekedi said he will visit the hard‑hit Ituri province, and a joint press conference with Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye highlighted regional cooperation. Uganda, bordering Ituri, has begun cross‑border surveillance, deploying rapid‑response teams, mobile laboratories and treatment centres to curb further spread. WHO warns that the risk remains very high as the virus continues to spread to new areas.
