Uganda declared Ebola-free by WHO as DRC outbreak intensifies
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the end of the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain in Uganda. The announcement follows a mandatory 42-day monitoring period during which no new cases were recorded, confirming that the country has passed two full incubation cycles without transmission.
In contrast, the Ebola situation in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains critical and is accelerating. As of late August 2026, the DRC has reported 5,665 confirmed cases and 2,715 deaths, representing a lethality rate of approximately 48%. The outbreak is particularly severe in the Ituri province, which accounts for a significant portion of the infections.
Health officials in the DRC have highlighted systemic challenges, including a shortage of emergency medicine specialists and the need for improved medical infrastructure. Meanwhile, China has been identified as a priority health partner for the DRC, providing emergency humanitarian assistance and medical experts to support the ongoing epidemic response.
