DRC government allocates $30 million for Mbombo dam project

The Democratic Republic of the Congo government has announced a $30 million contribution via the FPI to launch the Mbombo dam project. The total cost of the project is estimated at $120 million.

The dam is expected to produce 20 megawatts of electricity. While this capacity alone may not fully transform the economy of the Kasaï-Central province, officials suggest that if the project is completed and successfully connected to the grid, it could alleviate major constraints for households, public services, and small businesses.

The project faces significant logistical challenges. Beyond production, the government must address the financing of transmission lines and the connection of local communities to ensure reliable service. This comes as the DRC aims to increase its national electricity access rate from 21.5% in 2024 to at least 62% by 2030.
