Infrastructure development in Kasaï Central
Overview
In October 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo initiated two major infrastructure projects in the Kasaï Central province aimed at improving utility access.
First, the public utility REGIDESO announced the start of construction for a $160 million potable water production plant on the Lulua River. Supported by the World Bank and executed by Chinese companies, the project intends to provide 24-hour clean water access to over 58,000 households, addressing a region where service levels are currently below 10%.
Simultaneously, the government allocated $30 million through the FPI to launch the Mbombo dam project. With a total estimated cost of $120 million, the dam is expected to produce 20 megawatts of electricity. While officials noted that the project faces logistical challenges regarding transmission lines and grid connection, it is viewed as a step toward the national goal of increasing electricity access from 21.5% in 2024 to at least 62% by 2030.
