DRC and AFC/M23 agree on peace talk roadmap

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the AFC/M23 rebel alliance have agreed on a roadmap to guide upcoming peace negotiations. This agreement follows five days of discussions held in Switzerland from August 17 to August 21, 2026.

The roadmap establishes sequenced steps and timelines for negotiations, aiming to implement the framework agreement previously signed in Doha, Qatar, in November 2025. Key components of the agreement include a standardized method for reporting ceasefire violations and the creation of a mechanism to address implementation challenges of the Doha accord.

International mediators, including representatives from the United States, Qatar, Togo, Switzerland, and the African Union Commission, participated in the talks. As part of the peace process, the DRC recently facilitated the transfer of 15 prisoners to the AFC/M23 through the International Committee of the Red Cross. A ceasefire verification mission is expected to arrive in the Minembwe region of South Kivu to monitor the situation on the ground.
