DRC government reports mass killings and drone attacks in occupied territories

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported severe human rights violations in territories occupied by the AFC/M23 and RDF coalition. According to official data, more than 300 people were killed through summary executions, massacres, and bombardments during June and July 2026. The government also cited hundreds of cases of sexual violence, torture, kidnappings, and forced recruitment of youth in areas such as Tshanzu and Rumangabo.

In the Fizi territory of South Kivu, national deputies have specifically denounced a drone attack that occurred between August 18 and 19, 2026. The strike targeted the MWAJ I. hotel in Fizi-Centre, resulting in three civilian injuries and significant property damage. Local representatives attribute the attack to the RDF/AFC/M23/Twirwaneho coalition and claim such strikes on densely populated civilian areas constitute potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In response to these escalating incidents, Congolese officials are calling for an independent investigation involving national authorities, the United Nations, or the International Criminal Court to document evidence and establish accountability. Additionally, the government has raised concerns regarding the imposition of illegal taxes in occupied zones and alleged demographic shifts facilitated by Rwandan authorities.
