DRC military regains territory amid FRN-M23 accusations of attacks

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) armed forces (FARDC), supported by Wazalendo fighters, have regained control of the villages of Mahanga and Kilongo in the Masisi territory of North Kivu. The military operation follows intense fighting that began on November 3 against the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a group reportedly supported by Rwanda. Local sources indicate that FRN fighters have since retreated toward the strategic position of Kasopo.

Simultaneously, the FRN-M23 has accused government coalition forces of launching new attacks in the Walungu territory of South Kivu. According to FRN spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, attacks were directed at localities including Nyamarhege, Lulaba, Chulwe, and Kasika using combat drones, fighter jets, heavy artillery, and ground troops. The movement claims these operations target civilian populations in areas they consider liberated.

The security situation remains precarious across the Masisi and Walikale territories. Local civil society actors report that the ongoing violence is exacerbating a humanitarian crisis, causing massive population displacements and limiting access to essential aid for thousands of people.
