Austria and Switzerland increase vehicle seizures for speeding
Authorities in Austria and Switzerland are increasingly seizing vehicles and revoking licenses following severe speeding violations. In Lower Austria, 154 cars have been temporarily confiscated since March 2024 under stricter regulations. Recent incidents include a 20-year-old woman in Wiener Neustadt driving 112 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, and a 17-year-old in Straßham caught traveling at 158 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
In Switzerland, a German resident living in the Canton of Schaffhausen had his driving privileges revoked and his motorcycle seized after being recorded traveling at 177 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Hallau. Under Austrian law, drivers exceeding limits by 80 km/h in urban areas or 90 km/h on highways face automatic vehicle seizure, with proceeds from subsequent auctions often directed to traffic safety funds.
