Driving license regulations and penalties in Germany

In Germany, losing a physical driving license does not mean the loss of the legal right to drive, but it does necessitate immediate action. According to the Driving License Regulation (FeV), individuals must report a lost or destroyed license as soon as possible and apply for a replacement document.

If a driver is stopped by police without their physical license, it is considered an administrative offense, typically resulting in a fine of ten euros. However, driving without any valid driving permit is a criminal offense. Under the Road Traffic Act (StVG), driving without a license can lead to fines or imprisonment for up to twelve months.

Additional legal consequences apply to those driving while their license has been revoked, which may result in up to six months of imprisonment. Furthermore, vehicle owners who permit an unlicensed person to drive their car can face the same criminal penalties as the driver.
