Poland introduces new probationary rules for novice drivers

New driving regulations for novice category B license holders in Poland take effect on September 3, 2026. The primary change is the introduction of a mandatory probationary period designed to increase road safety for inexperienced drivers.

The duration of the probationary period depends on the driver's age at the time of obtaining the license. For those who obtain their license after turning 18, the period lasts two years. For those who obtain it before age 18, the period lasts three years, though it will not extend beyond the driver reaching age 20.

Key restrictions during this period include:

• Zero alcohol tolerance: Drivers must maintain a blood alcohol concentration of 0.0 per mille and 0.0 mg in exhaled air. This is stricter than the standard 0.2 per mille limit for experienced drivers.

• Penalty points: Exceeding 12 penalty points requires the driver to complete practical training at a driving technique center. Reaching 20 penalty points within the first year will result in the revocation of driving privileges.

• Supervision for minors: Drivers under 18 may only drive within Poland and, for the first six months, must be accompanied by a qualified supervisor (at least 25 years old, with a license held for at least five years, sober, and seated in the front passenger seat).

Violations, such as two specific traffic offenses or a three-month license suspension for speeding, can extend the probationary period by up to two years or result in a total five-year revocation of privileges.
