Driving safety and overtaking regulations in Vietnam
Drivers in Vietnam are advised on proper protocols for overtaking and responding to pressure from vehicles behind to ensure road safety.
When being pressured by a vehicle following closely during an overtake, drivers should maintain a steady speed and avoid sudden braking or abrupt lane changes. If the vehicle is within speed limits and conditions allow, increasing speed slightly can help complete the maneuver and clear the lane more quickly. However, drivers must not exceed speed limits or change lanes until a safe gap is confirmed.
Regarding overtaking on the right, current road traffic laws permit this maneuver if the vehicle ahead is signaling or actively turning left. While overtaking typically requires passing on the left, an exception is made when the lead vehicle is turning left or when specialized vehicles are working on the road and cannot be passed on the left. Even in these cases, drivers must ensure there are no obstacles, no oncoming traffic in the overtaking section, and that the maneuver can be completed safely with proper signaling.
