Drone bomb injures resident in Curicica, Rio de Janeiro
A member of the Parque Dois Irmãos Residents Association in Curicica, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, was wounded when an explosive device was dropped from a drone on Monday afternoon. Video circulating online shows the injured person and blood splatter at the scene. Authorities have not confirmed any additional victims.
Local residents say the attack is linked to a territorial clash between militia groups and the Comando Vermelho drug cartel, which both vie for control of the area. The Military Police’s 18th Battalion (Jacarepaguá) and the Fire Department reported they had not been called to the incident. The same day, a separate gunfight in nearby Vargem Grande, also part of the BOPE operation’s third day, resulted in three suspects being arrested as police sought to curb the factional violence.
The incident highlights the growing use of drones in criminal confrontations and the ongoing security challenges in Rio’s peripheral communities.
