Rio de Janeiro gang‑police violence escalates

Overview

Violence between Rio’s criminal gangs and police has persisted across the city’s North and West zones. Early May saw a civil police officer killed and another wounded during a DHBF raid in the Guadalupe favela, and a police shooting of a knife‑wielding intruder at a West‑Zone clinic.

A flare‑up from 6‑8 July involved a gunfight in Cinco Bocas, a drone‑delivered bomb at Complexo de Israel, and the ambush that killed officer Carlos Alberto Freire Neto on Avenida Brasil, actions linked to the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP). Subsequent attacks injured officer Julieli da Conceição Brandt (8 July) and, on 12 July, resulted in the execution‑style killing of military police Sergeant Yuri Luiz Desiderati Ribeiro in Jacarepaguá, captured on video showing motorcyclists firing more than 20 shots.

The pattern continued with a drone‑delivered explosive injuring a Curicica resident (14 July) and a 20‑minute gunfight in Morro do Cruz on 23‑24 July, both linked to rival TCP factions.

In late May 2026 a spate of shootings was reported nationwide. In Rio de Janeiro, an off‑duty officer fired back after being robbed, striking a passing woman; a prolonged shootout occurred in Morro do Cruz, and a man was targeted in Rio das Pedras. Separate incidents wounded two military police officers in Salvador and left a 19‑year‑old teen dead in Campo Grande. Investigations remain ongoing.
