Drone crash in Trabzon's Vakfıkebir district triggers explosives investigation

In the early hours of July 1, 2026, an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed near the village of Açıkalan in Vakfıkebir district, Trabzon Province, Turkey. The drone struck a tree around 05:20 and detonated, scattering debris and producing a loud noise that alerted local residents.

Authorities recovered approximately five kilograms of explosive material from the wreckage. Initial technical analysis suggested the drone may have originated from Ukraine, prompting a formal investigation by security forces and the gendarmerie to determine its purpose and flight path. Local officials, including the mayor of Açıkalan, and a resident named Ahmet Sağlam, reported the incident and cooperated with investigators.
