Moldova expels Russian diplomat after explosive drone crash

Moldova has declared a Russian Embassy employee persona non grata following the crash of a Russian-made Geran attack drone near residential homes and an energy facility in the Telenești district. The drone, which reportedly carried an explosive warhead exceeding 52 kilograms, landed approximately 100 meters from a house in the village of Chiștelnița.

President Maia Sandu condemned the incident as a dangerous violation of Moldovan sovereignty and a direct threat to citizen safety resulting from Russia's war in Ukraine. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the event as a serious breach of national security.

In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via spokesperson Maria Zakharova, described the expulsion as an act of "anti-Russian" hostility and promised a firm response. Moscow has contested the allegations, stating that no evidence has been provided to prove the drone's Russian origin.

This incident follows another unauthorized drone flight detected in Moldovan airspace on the same day, which entered from the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine and was monitored by the National Army's Air Operations Center.
