Escalating drone incursions and diplomatic tensions in Black

Overview

The frequency of drone-related incidents in the Black Sea region has increased, escalating diplomatic tensions between Bucharest and Moscow. In Romania, authorities have reported 129 drones or fragments falling within their area of responsibility, including the Danube Delta.

On September 8, a Shahed-type drone entered Moldovan and Romanian airspace, triggering RO-Alert warnings and the temporary suspension of flights at Iași International Airport. The drone eventually crashed in a field near Mihăilenii Vechi in Moldova. During the night of September 8-9, a Russian drone strike hit the Starokazacie international border crossing near the Moldova-Ukraine border, killing at least two civilians and damaging infrastructure. This forced the temporary suspension of the Tudora (Moldova) – Starokazacie (Ukraine) crossing point. The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Russian claims that the crossing was used for military cargo, calling such justifications ‘unacceptable’.

On Tuesday, a jet-powered Geran-4 drone penetrated NATO airspace, traveling at approximately 500 km/h through Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania before crashing in Moldova. The drone spent roughly 25 minutes in Romanian airspace, prompting the deployment of Spanish F-18 aircraft from the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. Moldovan police recovered wreckage near Mihăileni Vechi, noting a large impact crater containing metal pellets.

Heightened monitoring continues as Romania frequently deploys fighter jets to track aerial targets. On September 12, two F-16 jets from Borcea Air Base were deployed to monitor targets detected 16 km north of Vilkove, Ukraine, following RO-Alert warnings in Tulcea County. Authorities confirmed that no aerial targets penetrated Romanian national airspace during that specific incident.
