Romanian military forces destroyed an explosive-laden maritime drone in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project. The drone was spotted by a commercial vessel at approximately 06:28 local time, drifting within a few hundred meters of the production platform where several hundred workers were stationed.

To secure critical energy infrastructure and protect personnel, the Romanian Ministry of National Defense scrambled two F-16 fighter jets. One aircraft used its onboard cannon to disable the target, after which explosive ordnance disposal teams conducted a controlled detonation. Romanian authorities coordinated with Ukraine, which confirmed the drone did not belong to its military forces.

President Nicușor Dan blamed the Russian Federation for the incident, describing it as an irresponsible escalation. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen characterized the event as part of an escalating campaign of hybrid warfare aimed at destabilizing the European Union. The Neptun Deep project is a strategic energy development intended to make Romania the largest gas producer in the EU by 2027.
