Romania airspace violation: Unidentified target detected near Chilia Veche

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence reported that an unidentified aerial target entered national airspace near Chilia Veche on the night of September 26. The target, which moved along a route nearly parallel to the Chilia River channel, was detected by radar surveillance systems near the border with Ukraine.

In response to the intrusion, authorities issued RO-Alert notifications to residents in northern Tulcea County, advising them to seek shelter in basements or civil protection areas. Two F-18 fighter jets from the Spanish Air and Space Force, participating in the Enhanced Air Policing operation, were scrambled alongside a Romanian IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter to monitor the situation. The radar signal of the target was lost near the settlement of Pardina after approximately 10 minutes.

A specialized team from the Ministry of National Defence is scheduled to investigate the area on September 28 to determine the nature of the incident. While the origin and type of the target have not been officially specified, the event follows recent airspace violations in the region.
