Drone Signal Loss in Bulgaria's Northern Black Sea, Kavarna–Balchik
Over recent weeks, drone operators in the Northern Black Sea region of Bulgaria, specifically the stretch between the coastal towns of Kavarna and Balchik, have reported a surge of unexplained signal disruptions. Dozens of drones have lost GPS lock, stopped responding to commands, or vanished entirely despite flying within permitted zones.
Aviation specialists attribute the behavior to GPS interference, possibly linked to military activities in the Black Sea. Experienced pilots Alexander Georgiev, who has flown drones across Bulgaria for five years, and photo‑reporter Hristo Rusev, who survived a similar incident two years ago, described the loss of control. Rusev said, “The machine lost range and went in a totally unknown direction at full speed…”. Both advise operators to avoid flights over water, keep altitude below 20 m and maintain visual contact with the aircraft.
