Drones spotted over German military base and cargo airport

Two drones were spotted flying over a German Bundeswehr military base in Mechernich, West Germany, late Thursday evening. This incident occurred shortly after a drone containing explosives was discovered at the Leipzig/Halle Airport, a critical international cargo hub and a key logistics center for supporting Ukraine and NATO operations.

The discovery of the explosive device at Leipzig/Halle prompted Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to warn of a "new quality of danger." The airport serves as a vital node for the Strategic Air Transport Solution (SALIS) of NATO, which frequently delivers equipment to NATO's eastern flank.

Security authorities are investigating these incidents, which suggest a growing pattern of drone activity over both military installations and commercial logistics hubs across Germany. The recent events have increased pressure on air defense systems to improve drone detection and response capabilities.
