The Mechernich site is a highly secure installation housing a large underground warehouse that stores components for the American Patriot air defense system and maintains specialized personnel.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has warned that the country faces a "new quality of danger" and encounters daily hybrid threats. While some lawmakers have suggested Russian involvement, the Russian embassy in Berlin has dismissed the claims as a "fabricated provocation."

In response to the escalating pattern of activity over military and logistics hubs, Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened the national security council.
