France weather alerts: heatwaves and violent thunderstorms
France is experiencing extreme weather conditions, characterized by a combination of intense heatwaves, severe thunderstorms, and widespread drought. Météo-France has issued orange alerts for both heatwaves and thunderstorms across various regions.
In the south-east and central-east, thirteen departments are under orange heatwave alerts, with temperatures expected to peak between 35°C and 40°C. Concurrently, eight departments in the south-west are under orange alerts for potentially violent thunderstorms, which may bring heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts reaching 90 to 110 km/h.
Drought conditions have also triggered significant water restrictions. In Lozère, over 50% of the department is in a crisis situation. In Gers, new restrictions have been implemented in the Adour and Neste basins to protect water supplies. Additionally, western Moselle is under a reinforced drought alert, and Maine-et-Loire is facing rising temperatures alongside drought concerns.
