Drought Lowers River Levels in Tangerang and Depok, Prompting Water Crisis and Youth Swimming

Prolonged drought in western Java has reduced river flows dramatically. In Tangerang, the Cisadane River’s discharge fell about 12%, shrinking the water intake gate at the city’s tenth‑level outlet and triggering a local water shortage. Residents report lower fish catches and heightened concern over water availability.

In the neighboring city of Depok, the Ciliwung River receded to a depth of only 30‑50 cm. Teenagers, such as high‑school student Dika, have begun using the shallow, clear water as a free swimming and bathing spot, describing it as a pleasant alternative to heated pools. The low flow is attributed to the same drought conditions that have also caused well levels to drop across the area.
