Drought triggers water restrictions in France and Morocco

Severe drought conditions have prompted authorities in Charente, France, and Tata, Morocco, to implement emergency water restrictions to protect public supplies.

In Charente, the Prefect has issued an enhanced alert effective from October 6 to October 31, 2026. Due to low rainfall and dam reserves dropping to 20% capacity, strict bans are in place for watering lawns, ornamental gardens, and trees. Filling private swimming pools and washing vehicles outside of professional stations are also prohibited. Priority is given to drinking water, animal consumption, and fire safety.

In the Tata province of Morocco, the governor has temporarily banned seasonal crops with high water consumption, specifically targeting watermelon cultivation. This measure aims to preserve groundwater and ensure drinking water availability as aquifers face depletion. The decision follows ongoing local disputes regarding the impact of export-oriented watermelon farming on traditional oasis ecosystems and food crops.
