Drumcree dispute: Talks end without agreement
Negotiations aimed at resolving the Drumcree parade dispute have concluded without an agreement after five days of stand-off. Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant described the situation as being between a ‘rock and a hard place’ following late-night talks at Hillsborough Castle between representatives of the Portadown Orange Order and the Garvaghy Road Residents' Coalition (GRRC).
The dispute follows a decision by the Parades Commission to allow the Orange Order to march along the Garvaghy Road, a largely nationalist area, for the first time in nearly 30 years. The GRRC remains opposed to the march, and protesters have previously blocked the route.
During the discussions, various options were explored, including mediation and scenarios where the right to march is respected but not exercised. While the talks ended without a settlement, Sir Chris Bryant stated that his door remains open for future dialogue. A legal appeal regarding the Parades Commission's decision, originally scheduled for Friday, has been postponed until Monday.
