Drumcree parade dispute in Northern Ireland

The Orange Order proposed scaled-back plans for a parade at Drumcree, suggesting a silent march of 60 members along the Garvaghy Road in Portadown on September 27. This proposal followed a court ruling that overturned a prior Parades Commission decision. The Order criticized the Commission, stating its members have “no credibility” and that they have been “unlawfully and unjustly denied” their right to complete the parade since 1998. Political figures, including SDLP MP Colum Eastwood, warned that reopening the dispute could increase societal tensions.

In response to the proposal, the Parades Commission agreed to initiate a formal mediation process by appointing an independent mediator. The Portadown Orange Order described this move as “significant and unprecedented” and agreed to participate in talks “without precondition.” The Order has called on local residents and Sinn Féin to engage in the dialogue, expressing a preference for a mediator with judicial experience. A final decision regarding the September 27 parade is expected around September 23.
