DTCC launches tokenization service for $30 trillion in securities

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has officially launched its Tokenization Service (DTS) through its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company (DTC). The service allows eligible financial institutions to convert traditional securities held in DTC custody into blockchain-based tokens.

The initial rollout covers 34 eligible securities with an estimated market value of approximately $30 trillion, including select Russell 1000 stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and U.S. Treasury securities. These digital tokens are backed 1:1 by the underlying assets held at DTC, ensuring that ownership rights, economic entitlements, and investor protections remain intact.

Twenty major financial institutions have signed access agreements, including JPMorgan Chase, Citi, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Fidelity Investments, Barclays, and UBS. The service currently operates using the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu blockchain. DTCC plans to expand its roadmap by 2027 to include support for the Stellar and Circle Arc networks.

The launch follows a December 2025 no-action letter from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding the tokenization of these specific asset classes. The service aims to improve collateral mobility, capital efficiency, and liquidity by allowing tokenized assets to be transferred between registered digital wallets 24/7.
